چکیده

In this paper the process of data transmission in optical communication networks is modeled as a shop-type scheduling problem, where channels (wavelengths) are treated as machines. We formulate an Open Block problem with the minimum makespan objective (an OB||Cmax problem) in which a relation of a new type between the operations of each job is introduced: any two operations of a job have identical processing times and may be processed either completely simultaneously (in a common block) or, alternatively, with full diversity in time. We show that the problem is polynomially solvable for 4 machines, binary NP-hard for 6 machines and strongly NP-hard for a variable number of machines. Adding release dates to the two-machine problem also leads to the NP-hardness in strong sense. For the case of a variable number of machines we present a polynomial time √ 2-approximation algorithm and prove that there is no polynomial time ρ-approximation algorithm with ρ < 11/10, unless P=NP. For the case when the number of machines is fixed, we show that the problem can be solved by a linear time PTAS and by a few linear time statistically optimal algorithms (generating optimal schedules for almost all instances).

Robust production scheduling in open-pit mining under uncertainty: a box counterpart approach

Open-Pit Production Scheduling (OPPS) problem focuses on determining a block sequencing and scheduling to maximize Net Present Value (NPV) of the venture under constraints. The scheduling model is critically sensitive to the economic value volatility of block, block weight, and operational capacity. In order to deal with the OPPS uncertainties, various approaches can be recommended. Robust opti...

Incremental adaptive networks implemented by free space optical (FSO) communication

The aim of this paper is to fully analyze the effects of free space optical (FSO) communication links on the estimation performance of the adaptive incremental networks. The FSO links in this paper are described with two turbulence models namely the Log-normal and Gamma-Gamma distributions. In order to investigate the impact of these models we produced the link coefficients using these distribu...

Impacts of the Negative-exponential and the K-distribution modeled FSO turbulent links on the theoretical and simulated performance of the distributed diffusion networks

Merging the adaptive networks with the free space optical (FSO) communication technology is a very interesting field of research because by adding the benefits of this technology, the adaptive networks become more efficient, cheap and secure. This is due to the fact that FSO communication uses unregistered visible light bandwidth instead of the overused radio spectrum. However, in spite of all ...

Dynamic and Compiled Communication in Optical Time{division{multiplexed Point{to{point Networks Dynamic and Compiled Communication in Optical Time{division{multiplexed Point{to{point Networks

Optical interconnection networks are promising networks for future supercomput-ers due to their large bandwidths. However, the speed mismatch between the fast optical data transmission and the relatively slow electronic control components poses challenges for designing an optical network whose large bandwidth can be utilized by end users. The Time{Division{Multiplexing (TDM) technique alleviate...
